A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

In the Heart of the Douro, gastronomy is guided by the diversity that Mother Nature imposes and guided by the hands and hearts of the people of the Douro.

The smells and flavors we encounter in winter are different in spring, summer or autumn and are a true journey through time.

Port Wine

01

São João da Pesqueira is located in the heart of the first demarcated wine region in the world (Douro Vinhateiro) and is the municipality in this region that contributes the largest plantation of vines for the production of this wonderful nectar.

Oil

An ingredient that cannot be missing from the kitchens of Nagoselo do Douro would have to be produced by the people themselves. Nagoselo was once more a land of olive oil than wine, and ancient documents tell us that “without it [oil] there is a great lack and need in the land”.

Smokehouse

03

Talking about smoked meats means talking about centuries-old traditions. In the Douro region, the slaughter of pigs marked the time for the production of smoked meats. The salting houses were filled and the pig produced hams, sausages, blood sausages, commonly known in the region as moiras, chouriças and salpicões. These products are still made in the traditional way in the region today and are a delight for those who visit the heart of the Douro.
